Things in Sherwood aren't as merry as shey should be, not by a long
shot. Though the Sheriff and Sir Guy have returned to Nottingham as
brutal as ever after their trip "out of town", the people still await news
of their hero, Robin Hood, after he followed the corrupt noblemen to Acre
where they had plotted to assassinate King Richard himself. But Robin
is changed almost beyond recognition; a shell of the man he once was.
In the Holy Land, he finally married the love of his life Marian, but the
occasion was anything but happy, for the simple vows they exchanged
took place after she had been stabbed by Gisborne after admitting to
him that she would never love him, and was going to marry Robin once
all of the fighting was over and there was peace in England again. When
he left the Holy Land, as far as he was aware, Marian was dead and the
gang left behind Will and Djaq who had plans to stay in the Holy Land
and help the king negotiage peace. Robin was a broken man, and as he
and the remains of his gang arrived back on English soil, set about
trying to get revenge on Gisborne for killing the woman he loved. Allan,
Much, John and Carter have had a task and a half on their hands with
trying to keep him from doing something stupid, but Robin just doesn't
know how he can keep fighting, when the woman he fought for is gone.

But Djaq, beyond all reason or skill, has pulled off a miracle in the wake
of the devestation Guy's attack on Marian left behind. As she discovered
after she convinced Robin to return to England, and was preparing Marian
for burial, the noblewoman turned outlaw's wife was still clinging to life,
miraculously having cheated death for a second time. For weeks, the young
Saracen woman and King Richard's own doctors worked tirelessly to save
Marian's life, and succeded. After two weeks of clinging onto the desperate
thought that she couldn't lose the future she wanted with Robin before it
had even begun, Marian came round, and after another excrutiating two
months of recuperation, was finally deemed strong enough for the journey
back to England. Accompanied by Will and Djaq, she set off for Nottingham,
but she never expected to find the situation she did when she got there.
Robin himself hadn't been heard of for weeks, and while his gang do their
best to help the people under the leadership of Friar Tuck, the Sheriff seems
to be taking advantage of Robin's grief and is squeezing the villagers even
harder than he ever had before. And Sir Guy? Well, if the weeks of having
holed himself up in his bedroom in Locksley Manor have anything to do with
the rumours that he wakes up in the middle of the night screaming Marian's
name in anguish, then it's pretty much safe to say he isn't coping well either...
Gisborne's been living in Hell since he and the Sheriff returned from Acre.
His fitful sleep every night is haunted by the face of the woman he believed
loved him and the taunting words that caused every belief that he had that
Marian could learn to love him to crumble into the sands of Acre in which
he left Marian to die with the man she really loved at her side. How could
she have ever lied to him in such a way? Making him believe that she loved
him when really, she was laughing at him behind his back with Hood. He's
been waiting for the outlaw to come for revenge, and if that means his death,
then he's ready to face that. If that will put an end to his torment, then so be
it. Well, there's been no sign of the outlaw leader since his gang started to
go about their little routine again, and the Sheriff is positively crowing. But
even the Sheriff's little "court" is in chaos, as Guy's younger sister Isabella
arrives from London in the wake of (as she tells him anyway) her twin Lucy's
death from the sweating sickness. Add into that mix a few nobles who are
more than a little compassionate to the outlaw cause, and the Sheriff's niece
who, having arrived in Nottingham from France, has taken quite the shine to
Sir Guy, and you've got a recipie for disaster right there. As if Vaizey's strangle
hold over the people of Nottingham wasn't weakening already, chaos within
the walls of his own castle is the last thing he needs at a moment like this...

Rather than breaking the shocking news of her survival to the gang straight
away, Marian was convinced to wait for a moment when Robin was strong
enough to cope with the mind-boggling idea that she had miraculously not
met her end at Gisborne's blade again, by her childhood best friend in Robin's
little sister. Believed to have been murdered by outlaws in Sherwood Forest
a year after Robin's departure for the Crusades when she was just fifteen,
Angelika has been a persistant pain in the proverbial for the Sheriff as she
did everything she could to make his life a misery after he had her thrown
out of her childhood home. She's the one behind the supply convoys which
travel through the forest going missing, she was the mysterious figure who
broke into quarantined villages and at every risk of her own safety, delivered
food and medicine to those suffering inside, and miraculously saving lives
in such impossible circumstances that the Sheriff has had her alter-ego
of The Green Lady branded a witch. Hell, she should be able to pull off some
pretty incredible feats of healing when she's trained under the very woman
responsible for helping her own mother and Marian's mother Mary deliver
their children into the world, the Forestwife. Not so shockingly, her reputation
for being a witch hasn't deterred people from trying to seek out her help, and
Angelika has had quite the baptism of fire in her healing education when the
Forestwife and her family took her in. As Marian discovered when coming
across one of Angelika's not so subtle escapes back into the forest, there's
an entire community of people living in Sherwood, be they people rescued
from executions by Robin's gang, people who have been evicted by their
brutal landlords or just those who have had enough of the Sheriff's regieme,
there's honestly enough of these "ghosts" residing in the forest that the
outlaws could build an army if they wanted to do so. Life in Nottingham
seems like it's going to get a hell of a lot more complicated very quickly...

And then, at last, he's back. With a miraculous rescue of his gang members
from what promised to be an extremely painful execution, Robin Hood himself
is back in business once more. The people of England have hope again as
the stories of his exploits continue to spread far and wide across the country,
and a few figures none of Robin's gang expected to see decide that if they're
going to make their move, now is as appropriate a time to do so as any other.
The legend has returned , and it's time to tell the real story of Robin Hood...
this war is only just beginning...
